Do You Need Planning Permission?
Many loft conversions do not require planning permission and can be carried out under Permitted Development (PD) rights — provided your project meets specific criteria:
- Does not exceed 40m³ for terraced homes or 50m³ for detached/semi-detached properties
- No extension beyond the existing roof slope facing the road
- Materials are similar in appearance to the existing house
- No balconies or raised platforms
- The property is not in a conservation area or listed
- Not applicable to maisonettes or top-floor flats
If your proposed design exceeds these limits, or your home is located in a protected area, planning permission will be required.
