This ambitious L-shaped loft conversion in Finchley was commissioned to provide a sanctuary within a bustling family home. The objective was to repurpose underutilised attic space into a sophisticated, private master suite for homeowners seeking a retreat from the activity of a household with adult children. The project required a complete architectural rethink of the roof’s footprint to create a sense of luxury and separation.

The primary architectural hurdle involved the roof’s original pitch, which presented restricted head heights and awkward angles under the eaves. Integrating a full en-suite bathroom and significant storage without compromising the flow of the room required precision engineering. Furthermore, the client requested an open-plan feel that didn’t sacrifice the distinct functionality of the relaxation and sleeping zones.

Rooftop Rooms implemented a sophisticated split-level layout to naturally partition the lounge and bedroom areas while maintaining an expansive, airy atmosphere.

Technical glazing played a pivotal role in the design. A large rooflight was strategically positioned above the stairwell, acting as a light well for both the new suite and the existing hallway below. To enhance the modern aesthetic, a bespoke glass balustrade was installed at the staircase landing, ensuring an unobstructed line of sight across the levels.

The carpentry team executed high-spec, handcrafted joinery to reclaim every inch of the eaves. This included custom-built wardrobes and drawers tailored to the specific contours of the roof, alongside a bespoke shower enclosure expertly fitted into the restricted vertical space of the pitch.

The result is a master suite that redefines the home’s hierarchy. The split-level design offers a seamless transition between the “zones,” while the emphasis on high-end carpentry and glazing provides a “boutique hotel” finish. By unlocking the hidden potential of the roofline, the project has delivered a functional, light-drenched haven that blends smart storage with architectural elegance.
